《寂静的春天》于一九七二至一九七七年间陆续译为中文,开首几章曾在中国科学院地球化学研究所编辑出版的学术刊物《环境地质与健康》上登载,全书于一九七九年由科学出版社正式出版。

《寂静的春天》一九六二年在美国问世时,是一本很有争议的书。它那惊世骇俗的关于农药危害人类环境的预言,不仅受到与之利害攸关的生产与经济部门的猛烈抨击,而且也强烈震撼了社会广大民众。你若有心去翻阅六十年代以前的报刊或图书,你将会发现几乎找不到“环境保护”这个词。这就是说,环境保护在那时并不是一个存在于社会意识和科学讨论中的概念。确实,在长期流行于全世界的口号“向大自然宣战”、“征服大自然”中,大自然仅仅是人们征服与控制的对象,而非保护并与之和谐相处的对象。人类的这种意识大概起源于洪荒的原始年月,一直持续到二十世纪。没有人怀疑它的正确性,因为人类文明的许多进展是基于此意识而获得的,人类当前的许多经济与社会发展计划也是基于此意识而制定的。蕾切尔·卡森第一次对这一人类意识的绝对正确性提出了质疑。这位瘦弱、身患癌症的女学者,她是否知道她是在向人类的基本意识和几千年的社会传统挑战?《寂静的春天》出版两年之后,她心力交瘁,与世长辞。作为一个学者与作家,卡森所遭受的诋毁和攻击是空前的,但她所坚持的思想终于为人类环境意识的启蒙点燃了一盏明亮的灯。

由《寂静的春天》引发的这场杀虫剂之争已过去几十年了;尘埃落定之后,许多问题变得明澈。第一,虽然滴滴涕和其他剧毒农药已被禁产、禁用,但化学工业并未因此而垮台,农业也未因此而被害虫扫荡殆尽;相反,新型的低毒高效农药迅速发展起来,化工和农业在一个更高的、更安全的水平上继续发展。当环境保护刚起步之时,我们常在“要环保还是要经济发展”的疑问面前犹豫。在“经济—环保”这一矛盾面前,采用什么样的指导思想才能扭转恶性循环为良性循环,《寂静的春天》及其后的一段历史已为我们提供了一个生动的范例。第二,虽然卡森在这场斗争中获胜,虽然一些剧毒农药被禁了,虽然尔后更多的环保法令和行动被实施了,但我们的环境在整体上仍继续恶化。每年新出现的环境问题比解决的多,环境危害正由局部向大区域甚至全球扩展。我们所面临的困境不是由于我们无所作为,而是我们尽力做了,但却无法遏制环境恶化的势头。这是一个信号,把魔鬼从瓶子里放出来的人类已失去把魔鬼再装回去的能力。愈来愈多的迹象表明,环境问题仅靠发明一些新的治理措施、关闭一些污染源,或发布一些新法令,是解决不了的;环境问题的解决植根于更深层的人类社会改革中,它包括对经济目标、社会结构和民众意识的根本变革。如同生产力和生产关系的对立统一推动了许多世纪人类社会的发展一样,环境保护和经济发展的对立统一正在上升为导引人类未来社会发展的新矛盾。道理是很简单的,如果我们最终失去了清洁的空气、水、安全的食物和与之共存共荣的多样化生物基因,经济发展还有什么意义呢?社会组织还有什么功效呢?二十世纪后半叶是人类思想发展史上突飞猛进的时代。在这个小小的蔚蓝色星球上所出现的新思考中,全球环保意识的迅速觉醒是最具根本性的。一个正确思想的力量远远超过许多政治家的言辞。如今,卡森的思想正在变成亿万人的共同意识,这一新意识的觉醒正为人类社会向新阶段迈进做好准备。

世界各国虽国情不同,但面对这一跨世纪改革时的痛苦思考是共同的。中国,由于特定的社会、文化、人口和经济条件,环境与资源的问题会显得更加严峻。如果这一问题解决得好,中国有希望成为一片文明昌盛的人间乐土;若解决得不好,中华民族将会经历更深更苦的磨难。这是全世界所有中国人的关切和忧虑。
